A year ago, the storefronts at one end of The Shops at La Cantera sold jeans, graphic tees and soft knit loungewear. By the end of 2026 they will sell sofas, office chairs, mattresses and artisan dining tables. Forever 21 became Crate & Barrel. Urban Outfitters is becoming Arhaus. Soft Surroundings became Herman Miller. Together, those leases turned the mall closest to The Dominion into San Antonio's main stop for shopping furniture in person.
That matters because several of these brands had no San Antonio store before this year. When Crate & Barrel opened on August 20, MySA reported that its fans would no longer have to travel north to Austin and Dallas for its sofas and accent tables. For anyone furnishing a home off Camp Bullis Road, that trip has now become a short drive down I-10.
Who Moved Out, Who Moved In
The swap happened one storefront at a time. Here is where each one stands as of late October 2026.
| Former tenant | New tenant | Status, late October 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Forever 21 | Crate & Barrel | Open since August 20, 2026 |
| Soft Surroundings | Herman Miller | Listed as "now open" by the mall since August 2026 |
| Urban Outfitters | Arhaus | Under construction, with state filing estimating completion in late December 2026 |
| Not specified | Purple | Listed as "Now Open" in the mall directory |
Forever 21 closed in 2025 as the company went through bankruptcy. Urban Outfitters closed its La Cantera store in January and moved to North Star Mall. Both brands left on their own schedules, and the spaces they left behind were large enough to suit furniture retailers, who need floor space for full room settings.
The new stores also landed close to one another. According to MySA's June roundup, Arhaus sits across the street from Crate & Barrel, and Herman Miller is right next door to Arhaus. RH was already in the mall near The Falls, and Lovesac also appears in the mall directory. Six home brands now share one shopping center.
How Big These Stores Are
The 2026 filings show how much space and money these brands put in.
- Crate & Barrel filed plans in November 2025 for a 20,000-square-foot store, and a state filing listed the project cost at $5 million. The brand now has seven Texas stores, three more than when it filed for San Antonio.
- Arhaus filed with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation for a two-story, 17,660-square-foot build-out with an estimated cost of $9,000,000. The filing includes new exterior facades as well as the interior.
- Herman Miller is opening its first San Antonio showroom in the old Soft Surroundings space, according to the San Antonio Business Journal.
Arhaus will be slightly smaller than Crate & Barrel, but its filing shows nearly twice the investment. The money is going into a new exterior and a second floor, not just new fixtures. When it opens, that end of the mall will look different from the street, not only from inside.
The Showroom Still Behind the Barricade
Arhaus is the last big piece still under construction. The Express-News reported in October 2025 that the Ohio brand was founded in 1986, works with artisans worldwide, and sells living, dining, bedroom and outdoor furniture along with lighting and decor. The same story said Arhaus showrooms offer free interior design services and custom-made seating, and that the company had more than 100 showrooms nationwide, eight of them in Texas.
Construction started on March 26, 2026, according to the state filing, and its estimated completion date is December 26, 2026. That is a construction estimate, not an opening date, and the mall directory lists Arhaus without saying when it will open. If you're planning a holiday hosting refresh around a store visit, Crate & Barrel, Herman Miller, RH and Purple are open now. Arhaus is a better bet for the new year.
Where the Clothing Stores Went
Clothing did not leave La Cantera. It moved into other parts of the mall, which is why the furniture stores could take over a whole section.
- Rothy's opened in May in the former Steve Madden space.
- Pinto Ranch, a Western brand from Houston, opened in February near Tecovas and Lucchese.
- Coach and FP Movement, Free People's activewear line, both opened in late January.
- Brilliant Earth, a jewelry and engagement ring showroom, opened across from Kendra Scott.
- SKIMS took over the former Vineyard Vines space near Alo Yoga and Tecovas. MySA reported on October 9 that the store appeared to be open, though the mall had not yet confirmed it.
Two more are on the way. Dolce & Gabbana filed for a $1.9 million La Cantera store, which would be its second in San Antonio after North Star Mall. A filing for Jo Malone London suggests a debut in early 2027. The mall is adding clothing and beauty stores in some wings while home stores fill another.
Lunch Between Showrooms
Shopping for furniture takes longer than shopping for clothes. You measure, sit, compare fabric swatches and talk to designers. The mall's newest restaurant arrived just in time for that kind of visit.
Sixty Vines opened on August 10 at 15900 La Cantera Parkway, according to Axios San Antonio. The San Antonio Current reported that the name comes from its 60 wines on tap. It is the fourth La Cantera concept from Dallas-based FB Society, joining Whiskey Cake, Haywire and Ida Claire. The menu includes a Cabernet burger, hand-tossed pizzas and charcuterie, with lunch and dinner on weekdays and brunch on weekends.
For something quicker, Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams opened a kiosk in front of Sephora and Pacsun this summer, and Amornio Gelato arrived in mid-January with gelato macarons and shakes.
Across La Cantera Parkway at The Rim, Sunny's All Day Brunch & Bar added a second location at 17623 La Cantera Parkway, Suite 107, after starting at 518 River Road in Boerne, according to Community Impact. In June, Fox San Antonio aired a live look at the new location and its all-day menus. Breakfast at Sunny's makes an easy start to a Saturday spent comparing sofas across the street.
A Saturday Loop Through the Cluster
You can see the whole furniture row in one visit:
- Start at Crate & Barrel in the former Forever 21 space, the largest of the new showrooms.
- Cross to the Herman Miller storefront in the old Soft Surroundings space, right next to the Arhaus construction.
- Check the progress on Arhaus in the former Urban Outfitters space.
- Stop in at Purple to try mattresses, then head to RH near The Falls.
- End at Sixty Vines for a glass from the taps, or at the Jeni's kiosk if it's warm out.
Lovesac is also in the directory if you want to add a sixth brand to the comparison.
